Don't Ignore Neck Pain: Have a Professional Get to the Root of the Cause for Effective Treatment

Neck pain affects over 200 million people worldwide — no wonder considering the neck must support about 10 pounds of weight in the form of the human head.

This type of pain has a variety of causes, which is why a proper diagnosis and treatment plan are critical for a faster, easier recovery.

Drs. Jocelyn Idema and Ari Pressman and our highly skilled team at Steel City Spine and Orthopedic Center use state-of-the-art treatments for musculoskeletal and orthopedic issues.

No matter the cause of neck or back pain, we provide personalized care and emphasize nonsurgical or minimally invasive treatments when possible for our patients in Western Pennsylvania and South Florida.

Neck pain

Depending on the cause, neck pain can feel like a constant ache, a burning or stabbing pain, or even a shooting pain that extends into the shoulders or arms. Additional symptoms may include stiffness, headaches, tingling or numbness, or reduced range of motion for your head.

Neck pain can be acute, lasting several days to six weeks, or chronic, lingering for more than three months.

Causes

Causes of neck pain include:

Other health conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, can also affect the neck.

Diagnosis

If you’re experiencing neck pain that isn’t going away or getting worse, a proper diagnosis from a health care specialist is essential to prevent further injury or damage.

Your visit typically involves a complete medical history and physical examination. We may order diagnostic tests, such as a blood test to check for an underlying condition; an X-ray, CT scan, or MRI for images of the neck; or electromyography (EMG) to evaluate nerve function.

Treatment

Neck pain treatment depends on the cause of the pain, and may include conservative approaches like rest, cold and hot packs, and anti-inflammatory medication. We may also recommend muscle relaxants, physical therapy, injections, or manual manipulation.

Less often, these treatments fail to relieve the pain, and we may discuss surgical options. The type of surgery depends on the diagnosis, but we strive to be as minimally invasive as possible.

Whether your neck pain appeared recently or you’ve dealt with it for a while, knowing the cause is the first step to finding a treatment that prevents complications and helps you feel better.
